Smith did not make the squad for the game against Radford last Saturday and club officials remained tight lipped over the possibility that Smith was considering defecting across the border to join Danny Bryant’s outfit.

Heanor secretary Keith Costello was adamant that Sutton were out of order to approach Smith because they had already had more than the permitted two players from the Lions this season.

Dave Barrie, Danny O’Donnell, Nathan George, Ashley Wakelin, Danny Love and manager Bryant himself have all played for the Lions this season and are now on the Ashfield club’s books.
