Managerial chaos at Heanor as Bryant is replaced already
Heanor Town Football Club was plunged into further chaos last week when they failed to ratify the appointment of Danny Bryant as manager - and he resigned.
Along with Bryant, secretary Mike Knibbs also resigned indicating that his position within the club had been made 'untenable' by recent developments.
Things started to come to a head on Tuesday, July 24, when club officials were approached by former player Jamie Bennett with a view to helping out, and asked whether he would like Bennett to come on board Bryant gave his approval.
But it turned out that Bennett wanted full control and when Bryant also refused to take his appointed assistants Nathan George and Brian Franks out of the equation, the following evening he was left with no alternative but to resign also.
On Thursday evening, following a meeting of senior club officials at the Town Ground, Bryant was offered the manager's job, but was later told that the offer had to be ratified by the full committee and the result was that Bryant, for the second time in 24 hours, George and Franks all resigned immediately.
It further appeared that Bryant and his assembled management team did not have the support of the club chairman.
Bryant later issued the following statement to Club supporters and well-wishers:
"I would like to thank all those who helped me through a very difficult time. I would have liked the opportunity to try to take the club into the next level but it is not to be, and in leaving with my dignity and integrity intact I wish the club and its wonderful supporters every success for the future."
Following an emergency meeting on Sunday morning to further discuss the situation, a statement was released which, in full, said the following:
"Heanor Town Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Jamie Bennett as Director of Football.
"The appointment will bring to an end a period of indecision at the club. Jamie, a former player of Heanor Town Football Club, will bring a much needed injection of 'youth' to the club.
"Jamie will be responsible for overseeing all matters relating to the first and second teams.
"This appointment will hopefully make way for further additions to the committee of the club, which is fair to say short of 'young energetic individuals' who have the interests of the club at heart.
The directors and committee are fully supportive of this appointment and collectively look forward to much needed improvements and stability at the club."
Bryant's charges won their South Normanton Invitation Trophy quarter final against fellow Supreme Division side Pinxton 1-0 with a goal from Kev Davis and went into last Saturday's semi final against Mickleover Sports with Bryant and his assistants still in charge. But whilst they left the club immediately after the game, Bryant urged the players to stay.
Backed brilliantly by the supporters, Heanor were unfortunate not to get through to the final for the third time in four years, but after Richard Groves missed the game's clearest chance for the Lions on 72 minutes, and Joe Parlett had saved brilliantly at the other end minutes later, the game went to a penalty shoot out.
Andy Eley, Matt Vincent and Dave Barrie put Heanor 3-2 ahead after Parlett had saved Mickleover's first attempt. Then Steve Travis shot over the bar allowing Mickleover to square things up again. Skipper Martin Smith put pressure back on the Derby side but Aled Biggs saw his kick saved and the Lions went out.
Heanor's team was: Joe Parlett, Steve Travis, Aled Biggs, Nathan George (Gareth Vardy 71), Dave Barrie, Martin Smith (captain), Lee Stevenson (Andy Eley 69), Matt Vincent, Richard Groves (Danny Love 81), Ashley Wakelin, Danny O'Donnell (Marvin Hudson 61).
Whilst the Lions lacked fire power up front, midfield and the defence looked sound indicating that Bryant and his hastily-formed management team had done a fine job in a very short space of time.
There were tears in the dressing room apparently after the game as Bryant and his colleagues bade their farewell by urging the players to back whatever action the club committee decided to take.
