Buckingham Insurance Supreme Division club Heanor Town, lifted the Quartet Catering League Challenge Cup Trophy at the Impact Arena this afternoon but they found Vipond Fire Protection Premier Division opponents, Ollerton Town, more than their match in an absorbing final that ‘The Lions’ finally won 5-3.
Heanor Town only taking control of the match in the last four minutes, when they netted twice, a score that was in the end rather flattered the Supreme Division side.
After Ollerton had spurned a clear opportunity after only four minutes, it was Heanor who took the lead with their first real attack, Ben Roffey seizing on a mistake by two Ollerton defenders, to nip in to put 'The Lions’ in front.
Ollerton went close to equalising, a high lob nearly causing some embrassement to the Heanor keeper, who was glad to divert it for a corner, from the resultant corner Player Manager, Don Gethfield hit the Heanor bar with a header.
Against the run of play, Heanor increased their lead, keeper Neil McCalfferty, brought down Graeme Fowkes and subsequently Adam Nicholls dispatched the penalty.
Ollerton to their credit, did not let this further reverse stop them from playing some splendid football and the lifeline they needed came in the 23rd minute, when Dean Hankey, who had a splendid match, baffled the Heanor defence only to be brought down in the penalty area.
He duly despatched the penalty.
A few minutes later the Ollerton spectators where sent into raptures when Chris Booth brought his side level.
Just when it seemed that the teams would go in level at the interval, Ollerton Town’s Dean Hankey gave his side a 3-2 lead, again from the penalty spot, after a Heanor defender was adjudged to have fouled him, a lead that they fully deserved.
What ever was said to the Heanor team at half time certainly did the trick, because within two minutes of the restart, they had made it 3-3.
Graeme Fowkes cross shot beating the despairing dive of the Ollerton keeper.
Whilst the second half did not live up to the first half for excitement, the match which looked to be heading for extra time, was keenly fought with both teams striving for that goal that would seemingly win the game.
It was to be Heanor who broke the deadlock with just four minutes remaining; Chris Davis made a great run from just over the halfway line and drove an unstoppable shot, across the Ollerton keeper, into the corner of the net.
In added time, Tom Widdison made it 5-3 but the final score was certainly hard on an Ollerton Town side, which had belittled their Premier Division league position and could be proud of their performance.
BY OUR GOOD FRIEND FRANK 'I LOVE MYSELF' HARWOOD.
was he even watching the game? cos from what i remember, the second half was more exciting than the first, grahams goal wasnt a cross shot, it was an accurately placed shot into the corner of the net, and chris davies' goal went across the keeper and into the middle of the goal, it ended up less than a foot from my head, so i can be sure. We started well, 'flopped it' for a bit, the decided to try and make ourselves look good, no offence to adam nichols, but, out of very average performances from all 28 players involved, there really wasnt a man of the match! all the same, i'd glad one of ours got it. slightly worried that heanor red got chanted during the game but o well! gave you something to do lol
Not going to be travelling to barton next week so i gotta say see you all next season! just think how loud i'l be after a few months vocal rest! hope we can maybe get a support down dunkirk for the reserves last game of the season, should be a good game. best wishes all.
